One of the things that I love the most about eastern Puerto Rico are the beaches. When I was growing up, my family used to go to Balneario La Monserrate in Luquillo all the time, now as an adult with my own family, we love going to Seven Seas in Fajardo. For families with small children in Eastern Puerto Rico, the key is to find beaches with calm, shallow waters and good facilities. 🌊
Here are some of the best options:
- Balneario La Monserrate (Luquillo Beach): This beach is a classic for families. It boasts a wide, crescent-shaped stretch of golden sand and very calm, shallow waters perfect for toddlers and young children to splash around safely. The beach is lined with palm trees providing natural shade, and it has excellent facilities, including lifeguards, bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, and food kiosks. It’s also a “Blue Flag” beach, indicating high standards for water quality and safety. Bonus: The famous Luquillo Kiosks are just steps away for family-friendly eats.
- Seven Seas Beach (Fajardo): Located within the La Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, Seven Seas Beach offers calm and clear waters, making it ideal for families. It’s known for its beautiful surroundings and also has facilities like bathrooms, showers, and camping and picnic areas (with reservation). Make sure to arrive early so you can grab a shaded spot. Bonus: It is great for snorkeling with kids near the rocks when the tide is low.
- Playa Escondida (Fajardo): As its name suggests (“Hidden Beach”), this beach requires a bit of a walk to access, it’s about a 20-minute walk from Seven Seas, which can deter crowds, but it’s best for slightly older kids who can walk a bit. However, the reward is a secluded and beautiful beach with calm, shallow waters that are excellent for young children. Not ideal for toddlers due to waves, but great for a quiet beach picnic with elementary-aged kids. The tranquility and natural beauty make it a great option for a peaceful family beach day. Note that facilities here are limited, so you’ll need to bring your own supplies.
- Cayo Icacos (off the coast of Fajardo): While it requires a boat trip, Cayo Icacos offers stunningly clear and shallow turquoise waters that are perfect for even the littlest ones. Many tour operators offer day trips that include snorkeling gear and lunch, making it a convenient family excursion. The shallow edges of the cayo are ideal for young children to wade and play. Keep in mind there are no facilities on the cayo itself, so the tour boat will be your base.
- Palomino Island (off the coast of Fajardo): Similar to Icacos, Palomino is a privately owned island accessible by ferry or water taxi from the mainland. It features calm, shallow waters in certain areas, making it suitable for families with young kids. The island often has some facilities available for visitors.
- Playa Punta Santiago, Humacao: Local family spot with calm waters and mountain views. There’s a boardwalk and sometimes local food trucks. If you want to feel a ‘local vibe’ this is the spot, it is less touristy, more like a weekend family hangout. There are shaded areas, and picnic spots. Extras include nearby kiosks and a playground.
- Playa El Convento, Ceiba: Tucked away and quiet. Shallow water and not usually crowded. Bring snacks and shade—limited facilities.
- Playa Sun Bay, Vieques (if you’re up for a little trip!): Calm bay, clean facilities, and wild horses nearby (magical for kids!). Great for a full-day beach trip, it has showers, camping area, and stunning sunsets.
- Playa La Pared, Luquillo, (only certain areas): While known for surfing, parts of it (especially near the river mouth) can be very calm and kid-friendly. Locals often fish and play there… super community feel. Stay close to the river outlet for the calmest water.
General Tips for Beach Trips with Small Children:
- Sun Protection: Pack plenty of sunscreen, hats, and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to protect delicate skin from the strong Caribbean sun.
- Hydration: Bring lots of water to keep everyone hydrated throughout the day.
- Snacks: Pack easy-to-eat snacks to keep little ones happy and energized.
- Beach Gear: Consider bringing a beach umbrella or sun shelter for extra shade, along with buckets, shovels, and other sand toys to keep kids entertained.
- Water Safety: Always supervise young children closely in and around the water, even in shallow areas. Consider using flotation devices if needed.
- First Aid: Bring a basic first-aid kit for minor cuts or scrapes.
Enjoy your family beach time in eastern Puerto Rico!
